All residential, commercial, or multifamily property owners, managers, or tenants in Amherst are required to:
Contract with a licensed waste hauler for at least weekly refuse collection except when a variance has been approved
Develop and maintain a recycling plan for disposal of recyclable material banned from landfills
Be responsible for the proper disposal of hazardous wastes and any other material needing special treatment
Local regulations also prohibit private (curbside) haulers from accepting trash containing more than 5% (by volume) of recyclable paper or containers. This means that if your household trash contains more than 5% of recyclable paper or containers, your waste hauler will not pick it up until it is separated properly.
Amherst Town Meeting members passed a Single Use Plastic Bag Prohibition Bylaw on May 2, 2016 which went into effect on January 1, 2017. The ban prohibits restaurants and retail establishments from using thin film single-use plastic bags with a thickness of 3 mils (thousandths of an inch) or less in exchange for other recyclable or multiple use bags. Town staff completed a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) to assist business and restaurant owners with this transition.
