The Amherst Police Department R.A.D. Program
The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. The Amherst Police Department has trained many women based on the R.A.D system. The department has several certified instructors who pride themselves on educating females in self defense. If this is something that you would like to participate in or learn more about R.A.D., please contact Officer Jessica Damon.

Why R.A.D?
Because. . .
  • 1 out of 3 women can expect to be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. (Cohen, A., 1988; Become Street Wise)
  • 10 times as many rapes are committed than are reported. (FBI 1986; Crime in the U.S.)
  • 1.3 women are raped each minute in the United States. (National Victims Center Report, 1992)
  • 78% of rape victims know the rapist. (National Victims Center Report, 1992)
What else....
R.A.D is a program of realistic self defense, covering areas from risk reduction and avoidance strategies to hands-on defense training. R.A.D is not a martial arts program, but rather a course designed for simplicity and ease in learning, providing a system of effective and proven self defense tactics for women. Avoidance is taught as the first line of defense, and topics such as the concept and misconceptions of date rape and making a decision to resist are discussed. In hands-on training, women learn simple gross motor skill techniques which develop through practice and are refined by the use of padded equipment. Students then opt to participate in realistic scenarios, conducted by R.A.D certified instructors. These simulated exercises allow the participants to utilize the skills they have learned in unexpected encounters, all in a safety controlled environment.

The R.A.D. System/Program is designed to teach women about awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance while progressing into the basics of hands-on defense training. The R.A.D. System's objective is to "develop and enhance the options of self-defense, so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked." Contrary to popular belief, rape is not a crime of sex. Rape is a violent crime and a devastating experience, but it is survivable. Rape affects all people, no matter what their age, race or economic status. It is 1 of the most rapidly growing crimes in American society. FBI projections suggest that 1 out of 3 women can expect to be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. In the United States, 1 forcible rape occurs every 7 minutes. Each year, about 90,000 forcible rapes are reported to the police. But it is estimated that almost 90% of all rapes and attempted rapes are not reported. There is no 1 sure way to prevent a rape, because each situation is different. However, there are steps that can lessen the chances of a woman being raped. The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. R.A.D. is dedicated to teaching women defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assaults, by utilizing easy, effective and proven self-defense tactics. This system of realistic defense will provide women with the knowledge to make an educated decision.
